Siskiyou reports with notes and photos from RNC in Tampa 8-27-12

Conventions - workshops, Elections, Photos

From left to Right: Daralyn Reed, RNC alternate delegate from Yreka; Elizabeth Emken, CA Senate candidate; Debbie Bacigalupi, candidate for CA Congress; Donna Bacigalupi, Siskiyou Co. Republican Women’s President.

 Sent by Daralyn Reed:

G’day Siskiyou County from Daralyn Reed, Yreka, RNC alternate delegate; Donna Bacigalupi, RNC Guest and President of Siskiyou County Republican Women Federated; and Debbie Bacigalupi, candidate for U.S. Congress, District 14 (The 3 D’s).

We arrived in Tampa, Florida, (two thirds on Saturday and one third on Sunday, due to run- away dog). The California delegation is housed at the Trade Winds Resort, where we were welcomed Saturday night by former Governor Pete Wilson, great food, music and a fireworks show.  Because of jet lag, Sunday’s activities began very slowly but accelerated quickly and lasted through the wee hours of Monday.

The Faith and Freedom Coalition, led by Ralph Reed, sponsored its first-ever convention rally at the historic Tampa Theater, (oldest theater in Florida).  The agenda was varied featuring ministers of many Christian faiths, several hymns, folk music and rousing speeches.  We heard from Mike Huckabee, Phyllis Schafly, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, Newt Gingrich, U. S. Senate Candidate Ted Cruz of Texas, Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin, Will Weatherford, Speaker of the State House of Florida, and Governor Bob McDonnell of Virginia.  We learned there that next day’s convention session had been cancelled due to potential inclement weather.  Each of the speakers tried to allay our fears by making humorous comparisons between the threatened hurricane and the impending elections.  TexanTed Cruise stated ” 2012 is going to be the seond half of 2010… A title wave is coming.”  As an aside, Cruz  wore the sharpest cowboy boots we’ve seen yet.

The 3 D’s  were invited guests to the landmark Bern’s Steakhouse, which serves 700 to 1,000 people nightly and has the largest private wine collection in the world (500,000 bottles costing up to $30,000 per bottle).  Bern’s was named the best of all steak houses in the U.S. by Wine Specator Magazine.  We were given a tour of the kitchen including the 30 foot long steak grill and the incredible wine cellar, followed by dessert selected from a 65 page menu.

We were thrilled to meet U.S. Senate candidate from CA, Elizabeth Emken, at Bern’s.  We had a great chat with her about her visit to Yreka on October 2nd  (details to be announced).  Candidates Debbie and Elizabeth exchanged war stories from the campaign trail.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and Daralyn Reed, Yreka, CA.

We were then joined by Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi for a fun discussion.

Watch for further updates.

Daralyn

P.S. Also Don Schweitzer, president of the Siskiyou County Republican Central Committee sent a photo of his “traveling buddy” former U.S. Ambassador  John Bolton.
