Support Rural America: 500 town hall guests listen Sheriffs from 9 counties take aim at regulations

Sheriffs from 9 counties take aim at regulations

RED BLUFF — Sheriffs from nine Northern California counties on Saturday blasted government regulations and public agencies that, they said, have devastated their counties.

“We were sworn to defend America against all enemies, foreign and domestic. It seems we have more enemies that are domestic these days,” said Jon Lopey, Siskiyou County sheriff. “There is a movement to destroy rural America as we know it.”

But they also asked for help from the more than 500 people who attended the Support Rural America town hall meeting at the Tehama District Fair grounds.

Tehama County Sheriff Dave Hencratt played host to the event, which was attended by state Sen. Doug LaMalfa and Assemblyman Jim Nielsen.

Conservative groups, Republican politicians and the Northern California State Militia set up outdoor information booths.

Lopey and Trinity County Sheriff Bruce Haney took aim at regulations. Haney said they have strangled the timber industry, reducing its production from $32 million in 1985 to $800,000 in 1995.

Senate bill brings some big changes to farm policy, Capital Press 6/22/12. “The Senate is expected to show bipartisan support for the $500 billion bill that sets farm safety net and conservation policies and funds the food stamp program over the next five years…Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky opened Thursday’s session by praising the Senate’s recent successes in getting bills passed…Food stamps continue to command the great majority of farm bill dollars. Spurred by the bad economy, there are now 46 million people getting food stamps, at a cost of about $80 billion a year. That’s 80 percent of the entire farm bill budget.”

An answer for farmers, finally, H&N by Cordy Starr, posted to KBC 6/22/12. “…in an article written about Hollie Cannon, an employee of the Klamath Water and Power agency, said if the KBRA is implemented and “If we are successful with the on project plan, there will be hardly any change for the on-project farmer. Under the KBRA, less water will be allocated to the project, compared to the wettest years now but the irrigators will have the choice to participate in programs that pay them to conserve water and use ground wells.”

PUC considers surcharge increase, Siskiyou Daily News, posted 6/22/12. “Under the dam removal agreement, PacifiCorp’s customers will cover the first $200 million of dam removal costs. Any costs over $200 million would be covered by the state of California, up to an additional $250 million.”

California: Anti-Gun and Anti-Hunting Bills to be Heard Next Week

2nd Amendment rights, Gun rights & hunting, State gov

Please Contact state Legislators Today!

As early as Tuesday, June 26, several anti-gun and anti-hunting bills will be heard and voted on in state Senate and Assembly committees.  These bills have already passed in their house of origination and MUST BE STOPPED NOW!  Please call and e-mail members of each of these state Senate and Assembly committees and urge them to OPPOSE all of the anti-gun bills listed below.  Let them know that these bills will only impact law-abiding citizens and not criminals who will continue to break new and existing laws.  Please forward this alert to your family, friends and fellow gun owners and hunters in California and urge them to do the same.

The following bills are all scheduled to be heard as early as Tuesday, June 26 in their respective committees:

In the state Senate Committee on Public Safety:

(Committee contact information can be found here)

Assembly Bill 1527, introduced by Assemblyman Anthony Portantino (D-44), would expand on last year’s ban on open carrying of an unloaded handgun to also include unloaded rifles and shotguns.

Assembly Bill 2182, introduced by Assemblyman Norma Torres (D-31), would require that a person be arrested if they inadvertently attempt to bring a firearm through an airport TSA checkpoint and ban that person from entering that airport in the future.

Assembly Bill 2333, introduced by Assemblyman Jose Solorio (D-69), as amended, would expand California’s negligent storage law to any person who knowingly or reasonably should have known that a minor is likely to gain access to a BB device without the permission of the minor’s parents or legal guardian and the minor carries the BB device in a public place. Violators would be subject to a civil penalty, completion of a non-existent course on BB devices and/or community service. This bill would impose an unnecessary and potentially severe criminal liability on everyday toys (not just BB guns and pellet guns) leading to severe penalties.

Assembly Bill 2460, introduced by Assemblyman Roger Dickinson (D-9), would ban the private party transfer or sale of handguns by law enforcement officers that are not on the California Approved Handgun Roster.

In the state Assembly Committee on Public Safety:

(Committee contact information can be found here)

Senate Bill 1315, introduced by anti-gun extremist state Senator Kevin de León (D-22), is just a stepping stone to completely destroying California’s firearm preemption law.  Firearm preemption laws are in place to standardize firearm laws across the state.  This critical law keeps law-abiding gun owners from being placed in jeopardy of running afoul of local restrictions they don`t even know exist simply because they have crossed from one municipality to another.

Senate Joint Resolution 10, also sponsored by Senator de Leòn, would urge the President and Congress to pursue a comprehensive approach to stem the trafficking of illicit United States firearms into Mexico, that includes, among other things, enhanced collaboration among local, state and federal agencies, the allocation of a permanent source of federal funding to sustain local and state law enforcement operations to combat firearms trafficking and other border-related crimes, the redirection of federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE), United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and United States Customs and Border Protection resources towards this effort, reenactment of a strong federal assault weapons ban, and stronger federal authority to crack down on corrupt gun dealers.

In the state Assembly Committee on Water, Parks and Wildlife:

(Committee contact information can be found here)

Anti-hunting Senate Bill 1221, introduced by state Senator Ted Lieu (D-28), would ban hunting bears and bobcats with dogs. Many dog breeds with select characteristics for hunting can be traced back for thousands of years. Seventeen states allow bear hunting with dogs. The use of hounds for hunting has never been shown to have an adverse impact on wildlife numbers, as biologists and wildlife experts direct regulations and bag limits just as they do with other hunting seasons.
