The recent “Huffington Post” article attempts to paint two prominent Sheriffs as men who are above or outside the law. This could not be further from the truth. Although I am not qualified to comment on the problems faced in Maricopa County, I believe they must be serious for the duly elected County Sheriff to take positions which are so unpopular with the urban residents of the East and West Coast of the United States.
I cannot imagine how groups of people and politicians who are literally a thousand or more miles away from Sheriff Arpaio’s jurisdiction, as well as a so called writer in San Francisco, feel the need to weigh in with such vitriolic diatribe against the duly elected, sworn County Sheriff of Arizona.
I am qualified to comment on the issues facing the County Sheriff of Siskiyou County. I am qualified because I am one of the people who asked him to serve by placing my vote in the ballot box with a check mark next to his name. Think about that all of you protectors of the environment in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Sheriff Lopey is a man of honor.
Sheriff Lopey is a man of integrity.
Sheriff Lopey is the man WE have chosen to uphold the Constitution of the United States against all enemies both FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC.
Sheriff Lopey is the man WE have chosen to ENFORCE AND UPHOLD THE LAW.
Sheriff Lopey is the only duly elected law enforcement standing between the PEOPLE OF SISKIYOU COUNTY, and your agenda.
When anyone comes to Siskiyou County, they are bound to follow the law. Sheriff Lopey is the man WE HAVE ELECTED TO ENSURE THAT EVERYONE FOLLOWS THE LAW. Not the law as the agencies choose to interpret it that day. Not the law, the environmental-socialists wish they could use to destroy our way of life, but the law as it applies to everyone. Contrary to popular belief in Washington DC, the people of Siskiyou County enjoy equal protection under the law according to the fourteenth amendment. Sheriff Lopey is our elected representative who will make sure of it.
Glen Martin states in his July 2, 2012 “Huffington Post” article that Sheriff Lopey is disinclined to enforce some laws. I cannot imagine a bigger lie.
Glen Martin has probably never met Sheriff Lopey and certainly does not know him.
If Glen Martin, the so called reporter for the “Huffington Post” had any knowledge of Sheriff Lopey, he would know what the Voters of Siskiyou already know.
Jon Lopey is not anti-government.
Quite the opposite.
Our Sheriff has been involved in government all of his adult life. A Retired Field Grade Army officer and Retired California Highway Patrol Officer.
Sheriff Lopey is very proud of the fact that he works very well with State and Federal agencies.
Our Sheriff, and I repeat, OUR SHERIFF, will not tolerate any nonsense or illegal behavior from ANYONE. Sheriff Lopey will not tolerate illegal behavior from individuals or from Agency employees of the Government.
This is the reason: THE VOTERS OF SISKIYOU COUNTY HAVE ASKED SHERIFF LOPEY TO SERVE THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY, YET AGAIN.
The Constitution of the United States is clear and easy to read. The oath of office of a Peace Officer or Public Official is very clear and it is easy to read. The meaning of this oath is not confusing in the least. I sincerely doubt that Glen Martin or anyone at the “Huffington Post” has ever read it or the Constitution for that matter.
THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS A DOCUMENT BORNE FROM THE RESISTANCE OF THE PEOPLE TO THE TYRANNY OF A NON-RESPONSIVE AND OPPRESSIVE GOVERNMENT. GOVERNMENT HAS ONE FUNCTION AND ONLY ONE FUNCTION: TO PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF THE PEOPLE.
GOVERNMENT DERIVES ALL OF ITS POWER FROM THE CONSENT OF THE GOVERNED. THE CONSTITUTION WAS DESIGNED TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE FROM THE GOOD INTENTIONS OF WELL MEANING DESPOTS.
GOD BLESS SHERIFF LOPEY, GOD BLESS THE CONSTITUTIONAL SHERIFFS, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

There are times in history when walking the razor’s edge…is exactly where a public servant should be to protect and serve the citizen.
The land use system is out of balance. The courts, the agencies, and in particular, the federal law system and parallel political systems are not working properly. My personal observation is the federal management of lands has failed. Our govenment is broke, and we are fighting among ourselves. The two competing visions of land sharing have not reconcilled. Now these competing visions are including fighting for control of private property, and private property rights such as deeded water uses or mineral rights.
When various use groups are set against each other; when neighbors who have lived together historically in peace for generations are used as pawns in larger games the greater part of valor and service is to provide a buffer to keep the peace.
Personally, I see this as the role the Constitutional Sheriffs are presently playing in society as peace officers.
I see no conflict of duties, as swearing to uphold the US Constitution is part of the oath of Sheriff’s office. CLEO duty. The sheriff has a unique role of service to the citizen as the highest elected law officer. In a particular County, all other law agencies are subservient to the Sheriffs as elected and Chief Law Enforcement Officer law. The Sheriff’s powers are balanced by the law and court systems, as well as at the ballot box of the voter.
As an elected position, the office of County Sheriff is by definition: political.
The elected office of sheriff provides a law officer buffer to protect the people from rogue political agendas using the tool of the government financed gun from outside of communities. The office of sheriff also provides a check and balance against all other law enforcement agencies attempting to operate within the boundaries of a County. Being an elected position, the people are ultimently in charge of the law gun, by the power of the popular vote.
The idea here, is to prevent political forces from hijacking the law enforcement and using the government gun against US citizens to force a political agenda. The classic miltary political coup.
Outside political agendas are often accompanied by not so subtle threats of deadly force, as has been so aptly demonstrated by the previous behavior of both the California DFG and the USFS presentation of guns against US citizens.
Basically, the CA DFG [against Scott Valley water users] and USFS Rogue Siskiyou NF [against S. Oregon mining community] land management agency previous behaviors using armed force were interpreted by many citizens as:
“You will do what we tell you, or we will kill you.”
My read on the razor’s edge, is that the Constitutional Sheriffs are attempting to provide a buffer in society, to prevent that sort of ends from either of the parties involved in these land use disputes, particularly in regards to private property rights. Other polar issues such as dam removal on the Klamath River could easily gravitate to the lowest form of citizen and government agency communication, violence.
We are all above that level.
I also believe that the situation with many of these issues is heading towards guns, either in the hands of citizens, or the government. Guns just the same. Killing of one US citizen, by another, just the same. We are in historic times, times of political polarity coupled with severe economics. People are out of options.
Our disagreements have distilled to the point of no compromises, to the point of willing to die for our position on the issues. Family against family. Kill us all: men, women and children, or leave us alone. The Alamo. Waco. Ruby Ridge. Little Big Horn.
Gettysburg. Civil war.
There is little room left for many of the parties in these disputes. They are not bad people. They are people with no options left, being asked to give up all they have. That is the compromise. You give up all you have to me: the government or another competing use group, and we are now at a solution. Give up the third generation family farm to the government, give up the livelihood that separates them from being homeless and at the soup kitchen, give up your history and heritage, for example.
Some groups feel they are not safe from violence traveling the public roads, or alone on the public lands, even in their own homes. This is the situation. I understand this fear is also shared by many within the govt structure also. I believe this fear is well founded, and a valid concern. This is not a vailed threat, it is the truth. I have personally been very surprized that nobody has been shot dead, their home or office burnt down, from one side or the other to this point in time.
I believe, given the current politcal climate, if a government agency were to kill a percieved innocent land user we would have a situation such as the the Irish Republican Army vs British in Ireland. Guerilla warfare against segments of the govt by segments of the US population. The citizens are already prepared for this event. So is the government. I believe such a conflict would be bloody, long, and destroy much of our public infrastructure. There is a possiblility a small armed rebellion in the historical boundaries of the State of Jefferson would light off the entire United States into civil war.
People are good, obviously. People default to tolerance and patience.
It is my observation that the Constitutional Sheriffs are stepping forward to serve and protect. In this particular situation in Northern California and Southern Oregon, the focus is to protect the citizen against armed force from outside government agencies operating from internal policy or politics, not the rule of law or voter authority. The office of Sheriff is being used to shield the people’s livelihoods and inaleinable rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happyness”. The land, and it’s use is a portion of the pursuit of happyness.
The US Constitution is being used as a shield by the sheriffs, to protect the people.
