Klamath National Forest: Evacuation warning for Seiad Creek Road from Hwy 96

FIRES, Forestry & USFS

Miller Complex Abney Fire Evacuation Warning
September 2, 2017
Klamath National Forest

Evacuation Warnings have been issued to residents located both sides of Seiad Creek Road from State Highway 96 to the US Forest Service System Road 48N20; residents on the Old Seiad Creek Road in its entirety; and residents on the Ladd Road in its entirety. Notifications are being made as appropriate, based on current fire conditions, for people in these areas to be prepared to evacuate, should it be necessary. The Abney Fire of the Miller Complex spotted south over the Pacific Crest Trail and Klamath National Forest boundary. Firefighters are scouting and preparing contingency lines south of the National Forest boundary, north of the residences in Seiad Valley.

An Evacuation Warning means that you should be prepared to evacuate. Law enforcement and incident personnel will attempt to make personal visits to each residence and business in the areas of concern. Residents are responsible to make arrangements to move personal property and livestock. Residents need to make sure they have all of their valuables ready, along with medications and other critical belongings in case they have to be evacuated in the future. Some residents, primarily those with special health needs or other concerns, should relocate during this stage of evacuation.

Should it be required, the next stage would be an Evacuation Order. This means that evacuation is necessary in order to protect the lives of area occupants and emergency personnel responding to the incident. Law enforcement and incident personnel will attempt to convey this information to citizens door to door in person and also through telephone notifications.

Siskiyou County has instituted a rapid emergency notification service called CodeRED® which would be implemented if there was an Evacuation Order. CodeRED® employs an internet mapping capability for geographic targeting of calls, coupled with a high speed telephone calling system capable of delivering customized emergency messages directly to homes and businesses at a rate of 1,000 calls per minute. For more information, or to register for CodeRED go to: http://www.co.siskiyou.ca.us/content/emergency-information.

Information to help you prepare for a possible evacuation can be found at: http://www.readyforwildfire.org/Pre-Evacuation-Preparation/.

Klamath National Forest: Update Salmon-August Fires Complex 9-2-27

FIRES, Forestry & USFS

Salmon-August Complex Update
September 2, 2017
Date Started: August 11, 2017 Total Size: 40,150 acres
Cumulative Containment: 15%       Total Personnel: 1,539

Operational update: As of 6 a.m. this morning, Southern California Incident Management Team 2 has taken over management of the Fire Complex. The fire complex continues to be managed in unified command with CAL FIRE.
The Wallow Fire continues to be the primary fire that crews are focused on in the Salmon August Complex. A combination of ground and air resources have been successful at keeping the northern flank of the Wallow Fire near Kidder Creek and Shelly Fork from spreading. Crews continue to place and improve containment line on the north and east perimeter of the fire.  The majority of fire activity has occurred to the south and west, specifically in the Yellow Jacket Ridge and Yellow Dog Peak areas. Spotting and rolling material have produced spot fires, however, they have not created any significant runs. As a precautionary measure, an evacuation warning was issued yesterday afternoon for residents along Sawyers Bar Road, from Etna Summit to Nordheimer Flat.  Crews will begin to prepare structures and property for protection in this area.
Due to heavy smoke and poor visibility, aircraft have been limited to assisting ground crews with water drops and retardant.  However, six helicopters are still prepared to assist when visibility improves. Fire managers continue to assess the ability to utilize air tankers to drop retardant to connect and reinforce containment lines.

Temperatures continue to increase into the high 90’s and low relative humidity will continue to dry the burnable fuels. The wind and rugged terrain continue to be a factor in spotting and fire spread.

A forest closure order is in effect for the portions of the Marble Mountain Wilderness until the fire is declared out. The Pacific Crest Trail No. 2000 (Pacific Crest Trail) is included in the new closure from the intersection with Forest Trail No. 5545 (Kidder Creek Trail) to its intersection with Forest Trail No. 5542 (Shackleford Trail). Details of closure points can be found on InciWeb at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5501/#

An evacuation warning is in effect from Etna Summit to Nordheimer Flat on the Sawyers Bar Road.

Wallow Fire: 32,775acres; 15% containment. Fire fighters will continue to strengthen and hold established lines along the PCT and the spot fires east of the trail.

Island Fire: 6,954 acres; 60% containment. The original Island fire perimeter is now engulfed by the Wallow Fire.

Mary Fire: 142 acres; 10% containment; located five miles south of Cecilville on the divide between the Klamath and Shasta Trinity National Forests. Crews have cut line into the areas of most threat.
Rush Fire: 3 acres; 50% containment. Helitac and hotshot crews were able to keep the fire in check, and the area is being monitored.
Grizzly Fire: 90 acres; 100% containment.  Monitor and assess for any future operational needs.

Pointers Fire: 3 acres; 100% containment.

Garden Fire: 183 acres; 100% containment.

Residents within Siskiyou County can expect to see smoke for the next several days, from this complex and surrounding fires.  A daily Air Quality Report is posted on the fire’s Inciweb page.

FIRES, Forestry & USFS

Salmon-August Complex Evacuation Warning
September 1, 2017
6:30 p.m.

The fire has progressed to the Crapo Mountain and Yellow Dog Peak area which has prompted an Evacuation Warning to be issued for the area from Etna Summit to Nordheimer Flat on Sawyers Bar Road. All community members in the designated areas should be prepared to evacuate in the event an Evacuation Order is issued.

An Evacuation Warning is an alerting of community members in a defined area of a potential threat to life and property from an emergency incident. An Evacuation Warning may be issued when the potential or actual threat to civilian life is more than 2 hours away. Community members should have their family, belongings, and animals prepared to evacuate should an Evacuation Order be issued.

An Evacuation Order is issued when movement of community members out of a defined area due to an immediate threat to life and property from an emergency incident. An Evacuation Order should be used when there is potential or actual threat to civilian life within 1 to 2 hours or when the incident commander deems it necessary to protect civilians.
