News in Jefferson Country from Pie N Politics dot com Editor Liz Bowen: Is the state of California stealing water from ranchers in Siskiyou County? Several ranchers in Scott Valley have found their water by-pass return flows have been exceeding the California Department of Fish and Game’s own water code regulations.

As a result, several ranchers allege that the State Department of Fish and Game is a thief and is stealing their legally adjudicated quantities of irrigation water. Complaints of the thefts have been reported to Fish and Game officials with no response or change in the function of their by-pass flows.

The only recourse may be to sue the State Fish and Game for what looks like a “take” of the rancher’s legal water. Learn more at the Scott Valley Protect Our Water meeting tonight in Fort Jones at the Community Center. Time is 7 p.m.

News in Jefferson Country from Pie N Politics dot com Editor Liz Bowen: Looks like the California Department of Fish and Game is playing out a double standard in Southern California, where a mountain lion caught in downtown Santa Monica was allowed to be shot and killed – Reason: For the safety of the residents.

When Siskiyou County citizens walk out their front door and are confronted by a mountain lion, it is against the law to shoot it. And mountain lions have been found on home door steps. Why is it that rural residents are not allowed the same protection from a vicious wild animal that city dwellers in Santa Monica are given. This double standard affects livelihoods in Siskiyou County, because not only people, but livestock, have been threatened by such predators.
