The controversial move to let a lightning-sparked fire in eastern Shasta County burn to clear undergrowth — with unexpected winds causing the blaze to grow exponentially in just one day — is being bashed by north state politicians and residents who want to see the National Park Service’s policy change to stop similar debacles in the future.
“The state of the fire now is … a direct result of the National Park Service policy to let this burn out. They could have easily stopped it when it was at a manageable size, but because of their flawed policy now we have a much larger problem than we would have,” said Kevin Eastman, legislative director for state Senate and congressional candidate
Doug LaMalfa.
The Reading (pronounced Redding) Fire grew to 25,242 acres Wednesday — that’s about 39½square miles — and was about 25 percent contained.
